Bop Murdoch, Jody Burrell, Sarah Tuck - Coliberate

These three Wellington arts-turned health entrepreneurs are at the forefront of a global movement to reframe the way Kiwis engage with
mental health.

Two years ago Murdoch, Burrell and Tuck were running a theatre company that had made and performed ten shows and employed dozens of performers.

They realised that quite apart from making great theatre, they had excellent systems for developing resilient performers who could give their absolute best everyday.

Their idea was to bring the same level of “gritty self care” to the everyday world. They want to become the “Les Mills of mental health” by developing a gym like culture that normalises - even makes it cool - to engage in personal emotional well being.

Now people come to their studio in the Wellington CBD for emotional workouts, just like they go for physical workouts at their exercise gym. In the past 12 months they’ve trained 70 Wellingtonians to pass a Mental Health First Aid Certificate and their next goal is to have at least one Mental Health first aider in every Wellington organisation.

Long term they want every Wellingtonian to launch into every day with the same authentic self confidence that an actor takes onto the stage.
