Kiwis are ice cream lovers and Wellington boutique producers Wooden Spoon have hit a sweet spot in the market.
Created by Sharon Galeon and Midori Willoughby in 2011, the boutique freezery has grown from a monthly subscription service around Wellington to scooping up a contract to be sold nationwide through Progressive Supermarkets.
Despite the rapid growth, Galeon and Willoughby are committed to using the best ingredients and supporting other local producers: collaborating with Zany Zeus, Fix & Fogg and Peoples Coffee to create their award-winning ice creams.
Their fun, innovative range is inspired by childhood memories and their travels, which set the pair off experimenting in the Wooden Spoon Labs to find the perfect flavour blends. Their range includes Movie Night, a buttered popcorn ice cream with a caramel corn brittle which won a Cuisine Artisan Award; and Smokey Pokey, a twist on the classic.
The pair also has a strong social conscience having partnered with Kaibosh Food Rescue. They created Birthday Cake, a cake batter ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and donate 10% of the proceeds to the local charity.
Wooden Spoon is proof our appetite for artisan products shows no sign of abating.
