Where to buy sustainable and earth-friendly gifts
Celebrate a Christmas that's greener than ever with gifts that are environmentally friendly, sustainable, and stylish – everybody wins!
99 Willis Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Nisa is a socially-minded underwear and loungewear label that provides employment opportunities for women from refugee backgrounds, who make their sustainable products right here in Wellington. Made using certified organic cotton, Nisa’s products are soft and comfortable, and come in a variety of colours and styles for both men and women. Their eco swimwear is made from Econyl, a fibre made from 100% regenerated nylon from fishnets and consumer waste.
Head to their Willis Street workshop and storefront to see their team in action and shop their products, and find a gift that truly fits the brief.
11 Hopper Street, Mount Cook, Wellington
Head over to Hopper just off Webb Street, a space where you can have a coffee, purchase an eco gift, and enjoy some free parking at the same time. Hopper is an eco-sanctuary supplying local environmentally friendly products from baked goods to zero waste cleaning products and more.
It’s your one-stop-shop for all things plastic-free, supplying you with authentic goods to help make a difference to the environment.
For an extra eco-Christmas, pick up some of their Wellington-made Christmas crackers. They're filled with upcycled products, cracking jokes, and a sustainable crown made from the cracker itself, reducing waste.
143 Vivian Street, Wellington
One of Cuba Quarter's most beloved thrift stores, Recycle Boutique sells pre-loved designer garments for a fraction of the original retail price. Head here to stock up on clothes, shoes, bags, accessories and more, often by local or international labels.
It's the perfect place to spend a couple of hours digging through the racks for your perfect piece. With hundreds of stylish Wellingtonians selling their clothes through the store, they only accept good quality items and prefer boutique labels over fast fashion, so you're likely to find a gem (or five) every time you visit.

Sustainability Trust Ecoshop
2 Forresters Lane, Te Aro
Visit Sustainability Trust's Ecoshop on Forresters Lane for tips, tricks, and products to make your home and lifestyle eco-friendlier. From heating and gardening, to health and beauty and office supplies, they make it easy to find solutions that are kinder to your body and the environment.
Sustainability Trust also offers recycling of products like e-waste, curtains, old bicycles, plastic bottle tops, metal lids, used stationery, and dental care products. So next time you're thinking about a trip to the landfill, think again.
What happens when shoes go to heaven? More often than not, it's landfill, where they stay for up to 1000 years before they break down. Local footwear company, Orba, is kicking this problem to the curb with their stylish, sustainable kicks.
Wellington startup Orba's sneakers are the world's first biodegradable shoe made from plant-based materials, keeping you and the planet looking good. Their kicks are classic and comfortable, and the perfect feel-good gift for your loved ones (or yourself!).

Give the gift that grows this Christmas
Ditch the plastic presents this Christmas and give a native tree to be planted in New Zealand through Trees that Count. As well as being good for the environment, it's very affordable with native trees costing just $10. The recipient of your tree gift will receive a gift card and a notification as soon as their tree is matched with a planting project in the community.
If you want something to wrap under the tree, they also sell tees, posters, and Tree Snap (in both Te Reo Māori and English), and every item plants a tree, too.
