Only in Wellington: a rooftop hotdog and wine bar
The Ascot is a rooftop wine bar serving natural wine and hotdogs (as well as vegetarian 'notdogs'). Nestled in a cosy art deco space behind an Edwardian parapet, the Ascot is the city's newest quintessential Wellington hangout.
There's a small menu of hotdogs and house-made vegetarian carrotdogs which come in a range of flavours including cheeseburger-style with mustard, ketchup and melted cheese and a Korean-influenced version with kimchi and gochujang.
The bar is named after Newtown's old movie theatre, The Ascot, where the owner's grandparents ran the candy bar. The theatre's old copper plated signage now hangs pride of place over the bar at the Ascot.
Access is from Ghuznee Street between 1154 and Caughley.
