Find the best bars

Many of the best bars are hidden down side streets or tucked away unnoticed. Half the fun is finding them, but finding them often eats into precious tipple time. So here are a few of our favourites.

Matterhorn on Cuba Street is a Wellington institution and one of the locals' favourite haunts. Head down the long hallway to sit in the ambient indoors or large outdoor courtyard for one of their award winning cocktails.

Check the sign down the alleyway for vacancy at Motel. Here you'll find an extensive knowledge and passion for interesting concoctions, with regularly changing drink menus.

The Library

Just around the corner is The Library. A quirky, relaxed bar to have a chat over one of the many cocktails or obscure wines. Share a cheese platter, savoury snack or dessert. They do 2 for 1 desserts on Tuesday and 2 for 1 cocktails on Wednesday.

You're probably unlikely to stumble across these two historic Wellington cottages without knowing where to find them. Havana is a Cuban themed bar and restaurant known for it's great food, drinks and live music. Hint: if you can't find the bathroom, it's through the book shelf.

CGR Merchant & Co

It stands for Coffee, Gin and Rum and you'll find the CGR bar adorned with jars containing interesting infusions of each of these.

You'll get a welcome surprise in the large garden courtyard of Ancestral on a chilly night when you perch on the heated bench to warm your bum. Out here you can order from their outdoor yakitori grill or head inside to order from the main restaurant menu serving East-Asian cuisine.
