Tastiest new spots

There's always something new to try in Wellington with new eateries and bars regularly opening up. Here are some of the most recent and recommended.

Night Flower

Night Flower takes old-fashioned cocktails and reworks them with a botanical flair: possets, syllabubs, Rumfustians, fizzes, fixes and flips. If you don't know what we're talking about, you soon will. With a large deck overlooking the heart of Cuba Street, Night Flower is the perfect spot for a drink while you watch the world go by, below. 


Amador is a cosy rooftop bar with an extensive local and international wine list, as well as local craft beers on tap, cocktails, and a selection of freshly shucked oysters, charcuterie and cheeses to accompany whatever you imbibe. Centrally situated in Willis Street’s Press Hall, Amador is also open in the day for breakfast and lunch with cabinet food provided by Egmont Street Eatery.

The Hudson

This plush addition to Chews Lane is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and hosts individual bars, each serving an impressive array of house-cured charcuterie, cheese, gin, whisky, local craft beer (16 taps) and local and international wines. Drop in for lunch and grab a sandwich from the slow-roasted carvery, or settle in for a bit longer and tell long stories over small and big plates.

The Ascot

Only in Wellington: a new rooftop bar serving natural and organic wine and hotdogs (as well as vegetarian 'notdogs'). Nestled in a cosy art deco space behind an Edwardian parapet, The Ascot is the city's newest quintessential Wellington hangout. 


The name ‘Glass’ references the wine bar and restaurant's window-lined location on Chews Lane and also reflects their honest and transparent approach to sourcing and preparing its products. Glass serves simple and unpretentious food and pours natural and biodynamic wines, mostly from France, but some from closer to home as well.

The Ramen Shop - Victoria Street

The Ramen Shop began life as a pop-up restaurant and was so popular that it the owners set up a permanent eatery in Newtown, and have now opened a second CBD store much to the delight of Wellington's noodle lovers. The noodles are made from scratch and they use the best quality local and free-range ingredients, while still keeping the menu affordable.

French Cancan Patisserie

Much-loved patisserie, French Cancan, have returned to Newtown with a new and adorably pink café serving up their authentic French food. Fall in love with their professional-level eclairs and mille-feuille, savour their incredibly good quiches, filled baguettes, onion soup and niçoise salad and wash it down with some L’affare espresso.


Serving up oceanic eats and drinks in a vibrant Hawaiian-styled environment, Lulu is your tropical island escape this winter. We rate Lulu's on-trend poke bowl as among the best in town and you can order a banging burger from the next door Boom Burger and have it delivered to you at the bar. Boom. 

1154 Pastaria

A fresh and fast-paced casual pastaria from the Bresolin brothers (Scopa, The Bresolin), serving best-ever versions of best-loved pasta dishes, made from scratch every day. There’s gluten-free and vegan offerings, and natural and organic wine by the glass.

Pour and Twist

The first fully manual coffee brew bar in New Zealand, at Pour and Twist each cup is brewed to order using various methods. The slower brewing process encourages an appreciation for the process and art of the brew – and makes for a very tasty cup of coffee. Check out our Word on the Street review. 

Peoples Coffee on Lukes Lane

Peoples Coffee have opened a new flagship café on Lukes Lane serving 100% organic and fair trade coffee roasted at their Newtown Roastery. Pop by for a coffee (don’t forget your reusable cup), pick up fresh beans for your home or office or grab something to eat from the seasonal menu in collaboration with Esthers kitchen.
