Sky Canvas - Live at San Fran
With support from Simloco
To celebrate the release of their new single Fossil, Wellington 5-piece Sky Canvas are taking their radiant and hard-grooving brand of alternative soul out on tour this Spring.
Sky Canvas bring a dynamic blend of stirring vocals with colourful synth/guitar textures and fiery, dancing rhythms that you'll find yourself moving to - with a sound that has elements of off-centre soul and hip-hop with undercurrents of electronic, funky rock and eastern-tinged jazz.
Having formed at the NZ School of Music in 2016, they have since played many memorable shows and supported some fantastic touring acts - developing on the way a tight live set, a strong Wellington fan base, and a drive to continue to make compelling music.
Katelin Little’s vocals are soulfully charged; her lyrics, delivery, and presence on stage are sincere and absorbing. Fraser Walker (keys/synth) and Sam Nakamura (guitar) create a bright backdrop of texture and harmony. Luther Hunt (Drums) and Tyaan Singh (Bass) hold down the grooves; Tyaan also switches between instruments and brings the magic on his saxophone - which gets the crowd bouncing in a big way.
Their self-titled debut EP, recorded in Wellington's Surgery Studios in 2017 with Lee Prebble and mastered by Mike Gibson of Munki Studios, reached #13 on the NZ Albums chart, and #8 on the Heatseekers chart.
"Her [Little's] silky smooth lines in Carried Away begin: ‘Lost for words with you, It’s all so new, but I try to verbalise, and sunlight's streaming through, this little room...’ Immediately it is reminiscent of Hiatus Kaiyote, Emily King and Robert Glasper"
"Their music certainly seems to encompass all these influences as well as the academic. It is sophisticated, yet still accessible and very fun." - NZ Musician
"Wellington's Sky Canvas make kaleidoscopic futuristic soulful jazz.."
Don’t miss out on this magic!
