As home to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Wellington hosts a range of dynamic and delightful dance performances throughout the year. We've handpicked some of our favourites from the capital's dance calendar.
From 23 Feb – 18 Mar 2018, New Zealand Festival brings the world's most exciting and cutting-edge arts to Wellington. This year's programme features incredible dance works, such as martial arts and tai chi-inspired Beyond Time, dance–theatre hybrid Betroffenheit, an extraordinary adaptation of the modern classic Swan Lake/Loch Na Heala, and the world premiere of OrphEus, a dance opera by acclaimed New Zealand choreographer Michael Parmenter.
Two major dance institutions call the capital home. Royal New Zealand Ballet, our dynamic national ballet company known for mixing classical repertoire with a progressive attitude that is distinctively Kiwi. The company's 2018 programme includes an adaptation of the stunning Jane Campion film The Piano, and Strength & Grace, a celebration of the power of women in celebration of the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage in Aotearoa.
Wellington is also home to the New Zealand School of Dance, internationally recognised as one of the Southern Hemisphere's leading tertiary dance institutions.
Celebrating 50 years of achievement, the national dance school presents a season of visionary choreography at the St James Theatre on 24-25 Nov 2017. Saluting the many teachers, choreographers and dancers who have left their mark upon the School, and dance in New Zealand, performances will feature students of the School alongside dancers from the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
