Home to major music institutions like the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Wellington's calendar of good times is filled with a range of concerts to please the ears of all music-lovers.
The Mikado (25 Feb – 2 Mar 2017) is without doubt Gilbert & Sullivan’s most famous comic opera. Filled with vibrant colour, sharp blades, even sharper wits and an excellent cast of New Zealand and Australian singers, New Zealand Opera's production of The Mikado will transport you to modern-day Japan, where Harajuku fashion, mobile phones and Hello Kitty rule.
An enduringly popular opera, Carmen (1-10 Jun 2017) is a parade of hit tunes set in an exotic locale with a fearless heroine. Vital and dangerous, Carmen will be free at any cost, setting the path to the opera’s gripping conclusion. This production by Lindy Hume is sexy and sensual with all the things you would expect from Bizet’s ravishing opera.
A brilliant showcase of singing actors, orchestral colour and heartbreaking emotions, the powerfully emotional tragedy, Kátya Kabanová (7-14 Oct 2017) weaves a dreamlike, visceral story of isolation and oppression. Conducted by New Zealand Opera's Director of Music, Wyn Davies, it is directed by Patrick Nolan, whose past productions include the unforgettable Eugene Onegin and La bohème.
Jazz aficionados can enjoy mid-winter musical magic at the Wellington Jazz Festival (7-11 Jun 2017). From the cool and soulful to the downright riotous, catch global jazz stars alongside the best of New Zealand’s vibrant jazz scene. In 2015, there were over 100 gigs in five days!
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra's home base is right here in Wellington. We reckon they’re one of the coolest orchestras around, because they believe that the power and emotion of orchestral music is for everyone. Be transported by romance, drama and tragedy with their 2016 season.
