Wellington's sporting calendar is bursting at the seams this summer. There's an exciting line-up of games by our national and domestic teams in all sporting codes – cricket, basketball, football and netball – giving fans a reason to get out, show their support and make some noise!
The 'Nix are having one of their strongest seasons yet, thrilling crowds as they march towards the playoffs. With at least three more home matches scheduled at Westpac Stadium to take you through the summer, come along and support the team as they fight for A-League glory! The Phoenix is also hosting its Cash the Gate promo: if the crowd reaches a minimum of 10,000 people, one lucky fan will win $10,000 – and will score an additional $1000 for every goal and hattrick scored by the Phoenix (just be sure to be sitting in your seat around the 75th minute!). If that in itself isn’t a good reason to holler, whip your ‘Nix shirt off and wave it around, we don’t know what is.
The BLACKCAPS kicked off summer with a bang, taking care of business against Sri Lanka at the first test at the Basin Reserve and continuing their strong form throughout the series.
Following that, the BLACKCAPS are now up against Team India in a series featuring both ODI and Twenty20 matches in Waitangi week at Westpac Stadium. We know how passionate both sides’ fans are, so these games will really set the scene for a good old-fashioned cricket party atmosphere (especially at the 5th and last ODI!). The Waitangi Day Twenty20 is a doubleheader, with both the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS taking to the pitch – and Wellington band Drax Project will also be there with a live performance between games!
The WHITE FERNS knock the capital for six when they dish up a double dose of cricket alongside the BLACKCAPS on the Waitangi Day International Twenty20 at Westpac Stadium. They go up against the Indian women’s cricket team, playing before the BLACKCAPS take the pitch against the Indian men’s cricket team. The WHITE FERNS have already got off to a great start to their T20 campaign this season, with a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka’s women’s team. India are always a strong contender on the cricket world stage, so this will be an exciting match to watch – and we know fans from both sides will be ready to make a racket.
Don’t forget our domestic cricket teams, who will be playing home games throughout the summer at New Zealand’s home of cricket, the Basin Reserve. The Firebirds are competing in a series of one-day national domestic matches for the Plunket Shield, and Twenty20 games in the Burger King Super Smash. Also competing are the Blaze, Wellington’s women’s team, who’ll be smashing it out of the park in the national women’s domestic comp as they compete for the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield as well as in the Burger King Super Smash.
The SKYCITY Breakers are returning to Wellington for the first time in 15 years! They’re going head to head against the Illawarra Hawks in this Valentine’s Day showdown, where there will be no love lost between the teams on the court. This is the first Australian National Basketball League (NBL) game in Wellington since the SKYCITY Breakers hosted the Cairns Taipans, so be sure to grab a Valentine’s Day date – your partner, your kids, your mum – and get behind the SKYCITY Breakers for what is sure to be a nail-biter match.
