Culinary capital

An ideal weekend for Ray has to include a cocktail or two with friends. Start the weekend off with a visit to CoCo in Roxy Cinema to see Ray and the team. Try their cocktail of the week; currently a CoCo Rendevous – vodka, elderflower syrup, fresh lime juice with Bubble Kiss passion-fruit drizzle.

In need of a snack? You can’t go past Five Boroughs. Located on Majoribanks Street this New York style diner has the best buttermilk fried chicken in town. Wash it down with a Bam bam baklava or Jelly tip shake.

Hannahs Laneway (Leeds Street) located just off Dixon Street is arguably New Zealand’s tastiest laneway. Check out Six Barrel Soda, Fix and Fogg Peanut Butter and the Wellington Chocolate Factory for an afternoon treat or gifts to take home. Then make a stop at Goldings Free Dive or The Hanging Ditch for liquid refreshment.

Goldings Free Dive takes its inspiration from an American dive bar. It offers some of New Zealand’s most intrepid beers alongside revered international brews. If you’re hungry, grab a pizza from Pizza Pomadoro to snack on, available right in the bar.

When it’s time for dinner kick things up a notch at Jano Bristo on Willis Street, housed in a small, charming villa. It has an ever-changing menu of modern cuisine which is seasonally inspired, locally sourced and finely crafted by French chef and owner Pierre. Try their a la carte menu or seven course degustation.

Then on to Rogue and Vagabond for some live music and craft beer. It’s an ever changing set list so be prepared for anything from jazz to funk, rock or country.  It’s also a great place to park up on a sunny day, and enjoy some casual eats with a pint of the frofthy stuff on the lawn.

Finish your evening with a naughty treat from The Little Waffle Shop, one of Wellington’s late night secrets. Try a Mr Mocha, Caramel Cookie Crumble or a Lemon Meringue Pie flavour-filled waffle.

The following morning, you can’t beat a spot of brunch. Mirarmar’s The Larder, down the road from Weta Cave, is one of the city’s many fantastic brunch options. Order their buttermilk crepes with poached pear, citrus yogurt and rhubarb, or a Croque Madame with smoked ham, soft poached egg and swiss gruyere cheese.
