Kapiti Island offers a unique opportunity in New Zealand to view a range of our most endangered and rare birds, in a completely natural situation.
Kapiti Island Nature Reserve is an internationally significant reserve for some of the world's most endangered birds. The Reserve is now free from rats and mice, and bird and plant life are responding to the opportunity this provides.
A permit from the Department of Conservation's (DOC) Wellington Visitor Centre is required to enter the island. Transport is provided by two licensed boat operators.
A guided walk and talk is available from a licensed concessionaire.
