Get a glimpse into a pioneering New Zealand family at Wellington’s oldest original cottage, Nairn Street Cottage.
Built in 1858, Nairn Street Cottage is Wellington's oldest original cottage and is home to the story of the Wallis family, who lived there for three generations.
The cottage is now preserved as a museum, revealing a new exhibition experience that has undergone extensive research to present the lives and events of Wellington's history.
The exhibition features an innovative timeline, revealing what life would have been like from 1830-1970. It illustrates the ways in which the first colonial settlers blended their culture from their Victorian homeland with the constraints of a new country.
Outside the cottage is the heritage garden, featuring plants, fruit trees, herbs and three heritage chickens. The garden is open anytime to take a picnic and stroll around.
Nairn Street Cottage is within walking distance of the CBD and is at the start of the Aro Valley Heritage Trail.
Group tours and education visits are available on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday by arrangement.
