Cycle the vines in Martinborough wine village

Just an hour away from Wellington is the charming Martinborough Wine Village, home to over 20 boutique vineyards that are so close together you can bike the flat country roads or stroll between them. Here's a taster on a day in Martinborough...

Daytripping from Wellington

Wellington

Getting to Martinborough from Wellington is as easy as catching the train to Featherston, and hopping onto a connecting shuttle to Martinborough. Otherwise you could drive yourself, or join a guided tour such as the Tranzit Gourmet Wine Tour from Wellington.

On your bike

The best way to experience Martinborough's boutique cellar doors is on two wheels. Stop by somewhere like Green Jersey, located on Martinborough's main street, and hire a sweet vintage-style bike. You can even go all out on a tandem cruiser, or take a guide with you for some local tips.

Fuel up

cafe martinborough2

Before you set off to explore Martinborough, you'll want to fuel up with a caffeine fix. Luckily this village has plenty of excellent cafes to choose from, with local produce and top-notch coffee on offer. Stop at the likes of the Neighbourhood Coffee House & Roastery, and fuel up on their famous cheese scones and house-roasted espresso.

Visit boutique wineries

wine

With more than 20 winery cellar doors around Martinborough, there are so many to choose from. Here are a few local favorites to get you started...

  • Luna Estate is an idyllic winery to kick off your day of wine tastings, or a stop for lunch. Match a glass of wine with a menu inspired by Asian cuisine, or head straight for the tasting room for Luna's Pinot Noir,  Syrah, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Meunier Rose.
  • Margrain Vineyard is a great place to sample more unusual varieties such as Gruner Veltliner and Chenin Blanc. The  Vineyard Café at Margrain is an ideal spot to gaze over the vines - with a Gewurztraminer in hand, naturally.
  • Poppies Martinborough is best known for three things: its knockout rosé, its delightful winemaker Poppy, and its incredibly delicious (and seriously Instagrammable) platters.

You'll also be spoilt for choice for other things to do, and places to eat. Pack a few more in to your day or extend your stay!

Cool down

Gelato

On sunny days, one of the best ways to cool down after a day of tasting wines is a gelato from It's Quite Cool - a charming little caravan in the picturesque village square.

Grab a pint

Martinborough Brewery

And the other great way to cool off? With a pint from Martinborough Brewery - obviously. If you're not sure whether you fancy an IPA or a pilsner, try the tasting tray and you might just find your new favourite beer.
