Wild – as nature intended.
Set around a picturesque reservoir, ZEALANDIA is home to some of New Zealand's most rare and extraordinary wildlife - all thriving wild in a world-first protected sanctuary.
ZEALANDIA has a vision to restore this valley to the way it was before the arrival of humans. Birds such as the tūī, kākā and kereru, once extremely rare in the region, are all now common sights around central Wellington, thanks to the efforts of the sanctuary. Many vulnerable native species barely make it over the ZEALANDIA fence, due to the presence of introduced predators throughout Wellington, but these unique and iconic creatures are thriving safely in the sanctuary.
Venture into ZEALANDIA to wander a selection of outdoor walks that take you through beautiful native bush. Keep an eye out for saddleback springing mechanically from branch-to-branch, tuatara scuttling in-and-out of their burrows, T2 and Puffin the takehe browsing for food, and for the antics of many more rare animals.
If you book a ZEALANDIA By Night tour, you'll have a totally different experience in Wellington. You may even catch a glimpse of the endangered (and nocturnal) little spotted kiwi.
ZEALANDIA has activities for young and old and can keep you entertained anywhere from two hours to a whole day. Many want to explore further and purchase annual membership - a great way for you to help us restore while you explore. If you're local you may consider joining the 450-strong community of keen volunteers.
ZEALANDIA is for conservation, not profit.
