Wellington's neighbouring regions, Wairarapa to the north and Marlborough to the south, both offer epic mountain biking experiences in unique settings.
Marlborough’s great weather, stunning scenery and diverse terrain make for a mountain biker’s paradise.
The region boasts plenty of mountain bike trails for all skill levels. Find out more about some of Marlborough's options below.
Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced
The Queen Charlotte Track is regarded as one of New Zealand's best single track mountain bike rides and is one of the Great Rides on the Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trail.
The track is a mountain biking experience like no other. Beginning with a scenic boat cruise to historic Ship Cove in the Marlborough Sounds, the Queen Charlotte Track is renowned for stunning scenery and challenging terrain.
Even better, you don't have to carry your pack! One of the biggest bonuses for bikers is the capacity for your packs to be transferred to your next accommodation stop by boat each day.
Along the way you will also find there’s plenty of opportunity to jump out of the saddle and onto the water with kayaking, swimming and boating.
Campsites, lodges, resorts and homestays are dotted along the way, where you can settle in for the night and meet other travellers over a gourmet meal featuring local cuisine, or reinvigorate your body with a relaxing spa treatment.

The 1100 hectare Wither Hills Farm Park is a mountain biker’s playground, offering a range of grades for all abilities.
Start out by tackling the Lower Farm Track, a shared use track that provides an ideal family ride. A gentle climb along the way provides panoramic views over Marlborough’s wine country and across Cook Strait to Wellington.
The Molesworth Muster Trail follows the Acheron Road through Molesworth Station, the largest and most remote working farm in New Zealand.
The journey from Marlborough to Hanmer Springs follows the Awatere Acheron and Clarence Rivers, providing you with spectacular scenery and wide-open high-country landscapes that New Zealand is so well-known for.
This is a land of shifting screes, wide grasslands and steep hillsides. Terminal and lateral moraines, glacial outwash plains, hanging valleys and waterfalls, cirque basins, tarns and arêtes provide stark reminders of the region’s past ice ages.
A view-drenched, windswept ride over private farmland, with great Pacific outlooks, tough climbs and thrilling downhill runs.
Your packs will be transported to each night’s self-contained accommodation, where a cold beer or wine will be waiting.
The track is not cut, but follows natural hill contours, stock tracks and farm tracks.
Enjoy New Zealand's great outdoors and the superb local scenery on a mountain bike trail around the region.
Take a break from the saddle and explore historic towns, boutique shops, and of course, sample some of Wairarapa’s finest wines while you’re here.
