You’ve probably heard whispers about Second Unit, the new immersive event coming to town from 13 to 30 June. The details are shrouded in mystery, but we know enough to know it’ll be an unmissable experience. Here’s why you should go along.
1. It’s something different (to say the least).
Take a theatre show, a film, a rock concert, a music festival and a comedy set, mix them all together and throw in a choose-your-own-adventure video game for good measure. That’s Second Unit – not your average night out.
2. You’ll get a taste of what life might be like on a film set, though this is no ordinary shoot.
Here’s the concept: They’re filming a spinoff of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s instant classic What We Do in the Shadows, and they need warm-blooded bodies for extras (that’s you). A massive film set has been built in and around Circa Theatre just for the occasion.
3. You’ll have a one-of-a-kind experience.
Literally. No two people who go through Second Unit will have the same night, because each audience member is free to roam around the environment and interact with it however they want.
4. It’s brought to you by the team behind some of Wellington’s biggest parties.
Creative producer Chris Morley-Hall is the creative genius behind the original Cuba Street Carnival, Whopper Chopper Seaside Extravaganza and Weta’s annual party, and New Zealand Festival is renowned for their spectacular opening night events.
5. It doesn’t matter how shy you are.
Yes, Wellington is full of theatrical types – but it’s also full of New Zealanders, who tend to be a bit reserved. If you feel like jumping into the spotlight at Second Unit, you can; if you’d rather watch from the sidelines, that’s okay too.
6. It’s a digital detox.
Face it – we all need more of those. As soon as you enter the Second Unit world, you’ll be asked to surrender your phone so you can enjoy the experience in real time instead of obsessively seeking Instagrammable moments.
7. You’ll make new friends.
Whether you go on your own or as a group, Second Unit is a highly social experience. As you explore the set you’ll get to know your fellow “extras” and after the main event, you can stay and hang out – have a drink, have a dance, plan your future careers in showbiz… what a story to tell the future grandkids, eh?
8. You can do some star-spotting.
Some of the famous faces from the original What We Do in the Shadows film are involved. We can say no more.
9. You’ll have a life-long claim to fame.
All going to plan, Second Unit is going to become a calendar event in Wellington, something people look forward to every year. Don’t miss the chance to brag about attending the very first one.
10. If you wanna know, you gotta go.
Still unsure about what exactly Second Unit is? That’s the idea. There’s only one way to find out, and that’s to buy yourself a ticket.
