An unstoppable, infectious force of nature, The Cuban Brothers’ unrivalled funk and soul review blends sexy, soulful music with jaw-dropping b-boy action and riotous comedy. Despite much inappropriate touching, the band’s delirious rhythms, lightning wit, and gentle ribbing of world famous artists has seen them personally chosen to play by Elton John, Robbie Williams and Richard Branson. Off stage, their acclaimed debut album, Yo Bonita!’, which took the skittish dynamics of their live show into the studio, and TV & film appearances, including Ill Manors, Cuban Fury and Sunshine on Leith continue to expose them to new audiences worldwide.
On Friday the 5th of February, they will make their first live performance in Wellington in five years at Cuba Street's San Fran venue. In celebration of this, we asked several Wellingtonians to share their stories of seeing them for the first time.
...I went to The Cuban Brothers gig and it was like anarchy!
"The Cuban Brothers?! I couldn’t believe it man. Someone said to me, “Come and see The Cuban Brothers!” I said, “Who the hell are the Cuban Brothers?!” I’d never even heard of The Cuban Brothers before. Anyway, I went to The Cuban Brothers gig and it was like anarchy! It was crazy! The Cuban Brothers man! I mean, there was nothing Cuban about them, but I’ll tell you what, The Cuban Brothers know how to party!" – Geoff Marsland, Havana Coffee Works
The energy and absurdity of their show is infectious.
"The Cuban Brothers are fast-paced, upbeat, ridiculous good times. The energy and absurdity of their show is infectious: it's no wonder they are a hit world-wide. I'm seriously looking forward to their return. They had people at San Fran shrieking for them last time they were here." - Fergus Aitken, MC, comedian, character performer, corporate presenter, www.fergusaitken.com
I had no expectations and they blew me away.
"I was living in Melbourne and my friend forced me to go along to this show on a Wednesday night. It was in this tiny little club up these stairs. From the moment The Cuban Brothers hit the stage, they were just true showmen. They had the whole crowd in the palm of their hands. I had no expectations and they blew me away. One of them was breakdancing on roller skates and another guy stripped to his g-string. It ended with this enormous love in. Everyone was piling in, losing themselves and dancing and singing along. It was just a beautiful moment. From that point on, anytime they come to Wellington, I’ve made sure that I go along and see them. It’s the sort of thing where you just have to trust me and go see them play." – Beth Brash, Beervana festival manager
As Geoff, Fergus and Beth attest to, The Cuban Brothers have one of the most energetic, engaging and unexpected live shows active on the international festival circuit. Fans love them for their enthusiasm, talent, exuberance, raw energy and never say die attitude. Perhaps you're a fan and have a story about why you love them? Why not share it with us and your friends on social media? I'm sure if you've seen them before, you'll be wanting to attend again. If not, maybe you're convinced they're worth your time? Presale tickets are available now online from www.undertheradar.co.nz, check in with San Fran on the night for door sales details.
