What to do on a fine long weekend? Go for brunch at new eatery Lola Stays on Oriental Parade.

Lola Stays is found at… 106 Oriental Parade, where Vista used to be. 

You can expect… a neighbourhood eatery brought to you by the folks behind Mishmosh, with casual eats and spiffing drinks (their words). 

With fabulous flamingo wallpaper, contemporary art, and half the eatery open to the street, Lola is absolutely on the money for al fresco dining too. 

The food is a mix of colloquial Kiwi classics (bacon and egg roll), with interesting twists (cheddar and marmite mayo). The brunch menu is available til 3pm, and a day/night menu kicks off from midday, and therein you'll find the likes of whitebait and butter rolls, shredded pork tacos with apple slaw, and a poke bowl with market fish and wild rice.

We ingested… the smashed avo with tomato and goat cheese on rye, the toasted brioche with sweet crème fraîche, meringue and berries, and later, one of their cheese scones. 

The avo dish was fresh and light, on very good marbled rye. The toasted brioche was an exercise in decadence, with loads of crème fraîche, sweet berries, and a thick caramel sauce instead of maple syrup. I rather enjoyed the quality of the brioche too, and upon enquiry, found the breads hailed from Pandoro Panetteria

The cheese scone inhaled later at home was perfectly crisp on the outside, feathery and melt-in-the-mouth on the inside, suitably cheesy (but not OTT), and with red and green savoury highlights. One of the best cheese scones I've had in some time.

Lola Poppy Stays

The drinks… include a scattering of beers, a handful of non-alcs, fresh vibrant cocktails, and some of the team’s favourite NZ wines. They are also proud to grind and serve Havana coffee. 

I had heard from manager Charlotte that their ‘Poppy Stays’ cocktail was the most unique, so I had to try it. With Finlandia vodka, vanilla Galliano, Kahlua, and popcorn syrup topped with carnival corn, I was in sweet, sweet heaven. The crunch of the popcorn was an excellent complement to the syrupy liquid, and the whole thing was a very good accompaniment to my decadent brioche toast.

Spiffing indeed.

The service… was a little overrun on a holiday Saturday, but friendly and personable. Our waitress was very interested in what I thought of the cocktail (being the first one she’d made), and was very open to my suggestion that a little more popcorn would have gone down a treat. A very thoughtful and welcome approach. 

What tickled me most… was that there was no particular reason for christening the establishment "Lola Stays", other than the team's preference for the name Lola, and Stays covering off ‘stay a while, stay for a wine, stay cool', or anything you want really.

What I’m eyeing up for next time… is the firecracker chicken tacos with street corn and basil slaw, and the Fix & Fogg peanut butter smoothie. And maybe one of the very pretty chocolate brownies I spied on the counter. 

In conclusion… pop along to catch-up with friends over pleasant food in a light and breezy environment, or just pop in for a coffee and scone between appointments. Open 7 days from 7am til late.

    We observed its transition for a week while visiting Wellington & made a mental note to visit next time we are in Wellington. The finished goods look yummy. Well done. R & V, Auckland.
