Aromaflex is heavenscent

By Erica 18 May 2016 • 4 Comments

Sitting amongst the uber-cool shops at the top end of Cuba Street, Aromaflex is an inviting-yet-unassuming little store. Blink and you’ll miss it, but follow your nose and you’ll be sure to find it. Michelle, who works at the store, told me she often sees people walk by who smell the aromas drifting out onto the street, bluntly stop and reverse in curiosity.

Aromaflex started out in Nelson 20 years ago and is now one of Aotearoa’s largest sellers of essential oils. The Nelson store has an academy, training people in the use of essential oils and the Wellington store holds bi-annual workshops too. Their oils are certified as organic, they source all their ingredients from New Zealand (unless it’s unavailable, in which case it comes direct from the country of origin) and they have a refill and recycle system for all those pretty blue bottles. So lots of ‘saving the planet brownie points’ await you here.

All the staff are qualified to advise you and can help you deal with whatever physical or emotional issues you are facing. They can even cleverly combine certain oils together to deal with multiple issues. You can burn the oils in a beautiful burner/ diffuser/ vaporiser (of which, they stock many), pop a few drops in the bath, create a misty-spray concoction (which they can also do for you), or use it as a blissful massage oil. You can also use it to create cleaning products, transforming yourself into a serenely sweet-smelling domestic god or goddess in the spray of a bottle.

So, if you are an experienced apothecary- type looking for oils and raw ingredients to create some lotions and potions, or a complete novice like me who likes nice-smelling things, Aromaflex should be on your list of places to call. I’ve compiled my top five favourite concoctions that Aromaflex have created to help conquer the hurdles that life can throw our way:

5.  ‘Children’s Sleep Easy’ (Yep, this MIGHT be the miracle you’ve been looking for mummas)

4.  ‘Bacteria Buster’ (Kapow… bust that bacteria!)

3.  ‘Concentration Synergy’ (for all you studious, exam-taking types)

2.  ‘Kool Kids’ (calm those hyper little humans down)

1.  Hard day at Work Synergy’. (Let’s face it, who doesn’t need this at some point?!)

There’s also oils created for everyday issues like headaches, eczema, fatigue, varicose veins, cellulite and there’s some suited to certain times in our lives (‘Labour Synergy’, ‘Hot flush calmer’ and ‘Celebration’) And guys, don’t feel left out, there’s a range for you called ‘Man Cave’, used by local barbers and designed to soothe that stubble rash and keep your skin in tip-top form.

And if you needed proof that they really do stock every oil you could imagine, let me sign off with a little story... As I laid eyes on the little blue bottle of Frankincense sitting on the shelf I, jokingly, said, ‘Wow! Frankincense! I don’t suppose you have any Myrrh?” “Yep,” said Michelle matter-of-factly, “It’s just over here.”

Couple of factual errors…We do get essential oils from all over the world, France, Italy, UK, South Africa, Australia, Asia…wherever we can source the best. Aromaflex Academy is an NZQA PTE specialising in Aromatherapy & Reflexology Diplomas, which is housed above the Aromaflex shop in Nelson.
