Have a Welly Christmas – A Welly gift for everyone

12 Dec 2018

If you’re looking for presents for friends and whanau that are a little bit different to the standard box of scorched almonds and a pair of socks, then we’ve got the perfect list for you. Here’s our round-up of Wellington Christmas presents that will put you in the good books for the rest of the year.

For the Wellington lover:

For the person who loves Wellington, misses it or needs a little prod to book that flight and come on over, we think a care package from We Love Local will do just the job. Filled with locally-made treats, all made here in the capital, We Love Local has a range of gift boxes specially curated for the foodie, the coffee lover, and even for a rainy day (the appropriately named, Wellington On a Bad Day box). But the one we most recommend is the Coolest Little Capital box, filled with goodies from Fix & Fogg, Six Barrel Soda, Wellington Apothecary, Wellington Chocolate Factory and more. Wellington in a box. Done.

For the health and beauty lover:

Head straight on down to Wellington Apothecary on Cuba Street, where you will find a veritable bounty of scrubs, balms, soaps, oils and lotions made from local, natural ingredients to buff, moisturise and soothe oneself into fabulous oblivion. A popular option is the Clay Ritual Natural Facial Kit that comes with a vial of Sun Wind Sea Hydrating Face Serum – created especially to combat those changeable Wellington elements.

Just around the corner in Leftbank, you’ll find Lambert’s Luscious Men’s Grooming Products, boasting 100% natural ingredients and proudly NZ made. Come for the infamous Lambert’s Luscious beard oil, but stay for the new Hair and Body Bar, a three-in-one shampoo, conditioner and soap, in variants of Meadow, Forest and – the most Wellington of them all – Espresso, a special collab with local Wellington roastery, Gentlemen’s Beans.

For the food lover:

Because we all need more food over Christmas. Pop over to Moore Wilson’s or Ontray’s in Petone, and curate a little gift basket of your own, filled with local and international culinary treats – you’ll be overwhelmed by the selection. Both also have an impressive craft beer range from local breweries, so grab a mix of different styles – the beer lover in your life will love you forever.

We also can’t go past Lashings Brownie Bar on the corner of Eva and Dixon. Their brownie bar is topped up with fresh brownies, daily. Made using local ingredients from Lashings’ next-door neighbours (Fix & Fogg and Wellington Chocolate Factory), pick a box size and fill it up accordingly to your recipients’ tastes. Warning: you may devour said gift before it makes it to recipient, so do yourself a favour, and get one for yourself. (The peanut butter and jelly ones are nothing short of sublime.)

RNZB has a stunning line-up for 2019, including a contemporary re-telling of Swan Lake and a production of Hansel & Gretel. For the music lover:

New Zealand Opera has a stunning line-up for 2019 ranging from the crazy operatic comedy, The Barber of Seville to the chilling ghost story of The Turn of the Screw.

For the sports lovers:

Summer is a time for to put our feet up, but Wellington is action-packed with sport that’ll get you up on your feet and making a whole lot of noise for our local teams. Grab your sports lover a ticket to one (or more!) of the exciting line-up of games taking place over the summer in all sporting codes – cricket, basketball and football!

The Wellington Phoenix have just beat reigning A-League champs, Sydney FC; the SKYCITY Breakers are playing in Wellington for the first time in 15 years, and the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS are playing a Waitangi Day T20 Double Header against India at Westpac Stadium (with Wellington band, Drax Project, playing between matches!).

And for something a little bit different:

Because Wellington is just a little bit different, isn’t it? Nothing makes a better stocking stuffer than a good, old fashioned tea-towel. But not one of those stock-standard, banal, check ones from Briscoes. We’re thinking this very sweet one, covered with illustrations of your favourite Kiwi bikkies and slices, the work of Wellington artist, Giselle Clarkson. And to be honest, it’s just a little too pretty to use for the Christmas clean up.

For a piece of local eco-art, look no further than Wellington designers, The Furnace. This husband and wife duo create customisable, framed, 3D maps made from layers of sustainable bamboo ply, and hand painted using eco-friendly dyes, as part of The Re/Cut Collection. You can choose a map to feature a particular location, but of course, we are partial to the Wellington coastline.

Another cute little gift that’ll intrigue in a tiny little box under the tree, are these miniature, handmade replicas of your favourite dishes, by Wellington artist, Tiny Portions. Highly collectible and ready to become your new obsession. “What do you collect?” “Why miniature food, of course.” Very appropriate for anyone who lives in the country’s culinary capital.
