Well look no more.
As well as favs like Aunty Menas, Sweet Release (now 100% vegan), Boquita, Southern Cross, Midnight Espresso, Seize, Deluxe, Maranui etc., we’ve got new vegan options all over town. With barely a lentil in sight.
Having hunted out vegan products for themselves both here and overseas, Russell and Manda decided the time was right for a dedicated vegan store.
Need soy condensed milk or dulce de leche? Check. Sheese vegan cheese? Check. Lego sweets that you can build with before eating (I kid you not)? Check. Bamboo biodegradable toothbrush? Check. Eco-friendly crayons? Check. Berlin low-calorie Club-Mate energy drinks? A vegan pie and slice for lunch? Duck Island Frozen Desserts? Check. Check. Check.
There’s a lot of crossover into Halal, Kosher, gluten-free, dairy-free and other low-allergen foods here. And a mailing list you can join for regular tips, recipes and healthy eating advice. So something for everyone.

Kris from Sweet Release has started a vegan night market on the first Saturday of each month – the first on 1 April (you can imagine what the joke brigade thought!).
And all sorts of interesting things to take home – recipe books, tea, carry bags, plants, information on animal protection and the Vegan Society. Even Witches Dust protection salt if you fancy (there were several snorts from the chip fiend about my broomstick at this point!).
Next month there’ll be a professional artist doing face painting, and twice as many stalls, so mark it in your calendar now.

Since the Museum Hotel became the QT Museum Hotel, there have been a few changes, including a subtle swish-up to create a little more sleek.
There’s also a new stand-alone vegan menu at Hippopotamus, which Laurent Lodeauc, Exec Chef, slaves over (literally, being a butter and cream-loving Frenchman). The dishes were pretty, multi-layered, and beautifully executed.
Including a dessert for $18 that probably has at least $38 worth of time and finesse in it, and I can't stop thinking about - the Les Tropiques of coconut and mango panna cotta with brûléed fresh pineapple, kaffir lime gel, toasted coconut crumble, mango gel, freeze-dried pineapple, mango passionfruit glass (looked just like glass), and guava sorbet. Pretty impressive.
So go ahead, shake that piggy bank and go whole meat-free hog for an upmarket vegan treat.

And then I tripped over $5 nourishing vegan lunches during semester time at both Vic Uni Kelburn and Pipitea campuses, public welcome. How on earth did I not know about these???
The Krishna food is provided by the Bhakti Lounge, with the aid of mostly student volunteers (they’re always happy to have more volunteers if you have a few hours free each week), and is peanut-free, as well as gluten-free if one excludes the halava pud.
All utensils and leftovers are 100% composted (cleaning up after yourself is part of the deal), and I found it peaceful, tasty and immensely satisfying.
Totally blows away our previous value workday lunches under $10.

The Wellington Chocolate Factory are doing a vegan version of their new guilty shake, so what better dessert for breakfast?
Made with Gelissimo coconut milk gelato and soy milk, this beauty took about six minutes to make, and three to inhale.
I had no intention of consuming it all, but because it wasn’t OTT chocolately, and the coconut cream was sweetly moorish, I was soon sticking my finger down the side to get at the dregs. Yep, I’m all class.
