10 Wellington ways to treat your mum this Mother's Day

By Catherine 29 Apr 2019 • 1 Comments

They've tied our shoes. They've mended our boo-boos. They've taught us life lessons. We've all got a kicka** lady in our life who has helped us along the way, and Mother's Day is our chance to show our appreciation. Whether she's your mum or a mother figure, here's ten ways to make her day on Sunday 12 May.

1) Celebrate French-style

Your mum will be fizzing when you surprise her with an afternoon of bubbly and French treats at Crave Cooking School’s Champagne and Petit-Fours event. During the two hour class, you’ll be able to toast your mum with different varietals of champagne from the French grower Garance, and try your hand at crafting gorgeous bite-sized sweets known as petit-fours. The class is $99 per person and includes champagne tasting, all ingredients and recipes. Beret optional.

2) Put the mother into Mother Nature

There’s nothing like a brisk walk outdoors to get the blood pumping and the conversation flowing. If it’s high time you had a decent catch up with your mum, hit one of Wellington’s scenic trails and soak up bundles of fresh air, views and quality time. For a short and sharp wander, make tracks for the Mt Victoria lookout or stretch it out by continuing along the Southern Walkway. For a half-day adventure, conquer Kāpiti’s famed Escarpment Track, where you’ll be rewarded with epic views of Kāpiti Island and the coast. Or you could let mum take the lead and pick her own trail.

3) Enjoy some animal antics

If your mum has a soft spot for furry creatures, she’ll be tickled pink with a special Mother’s Day high tea at Wellington’s SPCA. Dig into a delightfully dainty afternoon tea of sammies, scones and other sweets, followed by snuggles with the centre’s resident cuties. Warm fuzzies guaranteed.

4) Bliss and make up

Need to smooth things over with your mum? A pamper session for two will do the trick. Make a date at Spring Spa and unwind with a 60-minute massage, side-by-side. Or let your mum put her feet up (literally) and relax with a blissful tips and toes treatment: a 45 minute mani pedi, served with bottomless Storm and India organic tea and top notch magazines. She’ll be toe-tally stoked.

5)  Lunch in luxury

Keen to splash out? Whisk your special lady over to the Wairarapa’s swanky lodge, Wharekauhau, and settle in for a lavish long lunch. Kick off with a glass of Louis Roederer Champagne before indulging in a five-course degustation lunch. Afterwards, cosy up by the fire for some quality chats over a decadent cheeseboard.

6) Have an art-to-art

Indulge in a bit of culture with a trip to City Gallery to see their two brand spanking new international exhibitions. Marvel at the meeting of art and science with the spectacular, large-scale moving-image works of Semiconductor, or ponder the mind-bending sculptures of Eva Rothschild: Kosmos. Pair your gallery visit with a pit stop at adjoining cafe and local favourite Nikau. Nibble on their scrummy baking or shout your mum the signature dish, kedgeree - a real crowd-pleaser.

7) Picnic in the park

Show mum you’re a bloomin’ great kid by taking her for a good old-fashioned picnic at Wellington Botanic Garden. Step one: head to Moore Wilsons and stock up on gourmet goodies to make a picnic fit for a queen. Step 2: take a ride on the Cable Car to the top then meander through the gardens to find yourselves a nice perch. Step 3: settle in amongst the autumn colours, lay out your spread and savour each other’s company.

Switched On Bikes

8) Put pedal to the metal

Take mum out for a sweat-free spin with Switched On Bikes. Pick up an electric bike for a half-day or full day, and head for the hills or cruise the coast for a wheely good time. Refuel along the way with a coffee break or three - Scorch-O-Rama, Maranui and Beach House and Kiosk all make excellent pit stops.

9) Raise a glass to her

If your mother enjoys her drinks shaken or stirred, hightail it to Highball - New Zealand’s first dedicated cocktail and spirits festival (11-12 May). Taking place at the Embassy Theatre, this neat festival will showcase spirit makers and cocktail shakers from New Zealand and abroad. Sip your way around the world in the Tasting Room or cosy up with a concoction in the Speakeasy. Pair it all with bites from some of Wellington’s fave eateries.

10) Practice peace and quiet

Give the gift of zen with a soul-warming yoga session at one of Wellington’s lush studios. For ultimate tranquility, take your mumma to Pause in Days Bay, a yoga studio that doubles as a treehouse. Nestled into native bush, here you can listen to the birds’ chorus while perfecting your down dog. Or try out SPACE in Mount Vic, a breathtaking studio, where you can soak up 180 degree vistas of harbour and hills.
