Musician Hugo Drummond always wanted to have his own bar. In 2017, he and his wife Manna got to do just that when they took over this popular beachside café/bar. Sadly, Drummond died a few months later but Manna is continuing his vision. The menu focuses on fresh, local ingredients as well as local beer and wine. Unsurprisingly, music is the mainstay of this community café/bar, with live bands every weekend.

Salt & Wood Collective

This is a bar that makes decisions difficult. Which of the 14 or so beers brewed at the on-site North End Brewery should you have? Perhaps the tart, slightly salty wheat beer charmingly named Become the Ocean, or maybe the Saison du Nectar, which features hints of dried mango?

Fortunately, the staff know what they’re talking about so just ask for what’s good. There’s also a large wine and cocktail selection, and well-thought breakfast and burger menu for all-day dining.

Life has come full circle for Fi Greig, who worked in a café on this spot as a teenager. But Sunday Cantina in Waikanae couldn’t be more different – there are vegan raw cakes, veggie broths and bowls that are an edible rainbow of health. Additional points for the quirky decor, Bella the resident dog and comfy seats where you’ll want to stay all day. Greig also teaches popular cooking classes.

Hola Mexican

24 Marine Parade, Paraparaumu Beach

Hospitality is in the blood of Londoner Ricardo Reis who started in his mother’s Portuguese restaurant when he was 14 before going on to bartend for Elton John and Formula 1 teams. Reis moved to Kāpiti with his Kiwi wife and has brought Mexico to the coast with Hola.

They've got two stories of authentic Mexican food right near the water - head downstairs for street food faves like spicy nachos, corn tacos, chilli con queso and jalapeño poppers, or go upstairs to the bar and grill for the full culinary experience. Finish up your meal with some authentic Mexican tequila, and incredible views of Kapiti Island. Salud!
