The Wine Bank is an all-weather, all-season wine experience
A tasting experience unique to the North Island, allowing you to try many incredible wines from Martinborough and further afield, at one very comfortable location
Without a doubt, Martinborough is a place for great wine, whether you’re a wine aficionado or are out on a weekend getaway. For a tasting experience that manages to be both luxurious and relaxed, head to The Wine Bank, just off Memorial Square.
Unlike anywhere else in town, let alone the North Island, The Wine Bank offers a range of local wines served by an innovative dispensing unit built in Italy. The only other unit of this type is found in the South Island. The careful design allows 64 wines to be open at any one time, while always reflecting the quality and integrity of the wine itself.
Co-founders Marty Davis and Sarah Hamilton were driven to create what they call ‘a different kind of wine experience’, with a big focus on local producers. After extensive research, many conversations with local wineries and many hours of restoration of the beautiful old building, The Wine Bank was opened.
Inside you’ll find recognisable names and crowd favourites as well as many bottles from boutique vineyards that don’t have their own tasting room or cellar door. There aren’t many places you can take a sip of a Dry River Lovat Gewurztraminer or pinot noir, and then try more local Martinborough wines from Devotus, Ata Rangi, Huntress Wines, and The Elder all on the same day.
Each wine comes with tasting notes that you can find in booklet form or view on your phone. In addition, the team on the floor have an impressive knowledge of the wines available and can guide your experience or offer helpful information. You can also taste at your own pace, choosing your desired bottle and picking from three size options - a 25ml taste, 75ml half glass or 150ml full glass. If you taste a wine you can’t leave behind, buy a bottle to take home or have it shipped back.
This is an excellent chance to try new varieties of the wines you love, compare names and indulge at your leisure. Along with the wine, treat yourself to simple dishes of bread and dips, smoked salmon pate, arancini, or blue cheese and onion galette.
The building itself is more than a century old and true to its name housed a bank for many years. An extensive makeover brought the historic gem back to life. To step inside you’re now greeted with luxuriously decorated rooms complete with elegant wallpaper, brown leather and emerald armchairs, and ornate light fixtures.
Fitting for all seasons and weather, The Wine Bank is a top stop for a pre-dinner delight or an easy and delicious afternoon experience.
If you want to try the best wines that the region offers, this is the place. If you want to sit back with friends and enjoy a few wines, this is the place.
