Gardens Magic: Three weeks of free concerts
Magical music and light shows make this event one for the books. Daily concerts champion local talent while light shows illuminate the gardens, and all for free.
Gardens Magic lives up to its name, bringing the magic of music and light to Wellington Botanic Garden, and all for free entry. For three weeks of January, Wellingtonians and visitors alike are invited to head along to daily concerts and light displays.
Not just an everyday musical event, Gardens Magic spans a variety of genres and styles, taking you on a journey from modern sounds to classic compositions and back again. Along with the light show this is a special experience. Take your mates and a picnic blanket, and settle in for a musical feast of jazz, indie, rock, pop, Māori, americana, folk, blues, electronic or world music.
With top local talent, the lineup includes garage funksters OdESSA, playing live for the first time in 11 years, as well as Glass Vaults with Fletcher Mills, Jamie and the Numbers, C-26 Salsa Band, New Zealand Opera, Darren Watson, WAI and many more. The showcase ends with Supertonic, made up of more than 50 members, with their choral tribute to Elton John. For this evening performance you’re invited to dress up in your best glittering ensemble and sing along.
MJF Lighting is back for 2021, working with Tungsten Projects and adding new elements to make the light show pop. Immersed in the gardens will be a UV bamboo grove, an artistic tribute to native birds, an outdoor gallery of temporary public art, and works for sale by Wellington sculptors Jonathan Campbell and Campbell Maud.
