Feel the wind in your hair and hear the roar of the sea with a walk to Pariwhero/Red Rocks on Wellington’s ruggedly beautiful South Coast. These incredible rocks were formed 200 million years ago by undersea volcanic eruptions and are linked to legendary Polynesian explorer Kupe. From May to October, a New Zealand fur seal colony moves in and calls Red Rocks home as they do a little sunbathing on the rocks. Take care to give the seals plenty of space and observe their activities from a safe distance.

Scorching Bay

Scorching Bay, Karaka Bays, Wellington

On a scorching hot Wellington summer’s day, the place to be is Scorching Bay on the Miramar Peninsula. Arguably Wellington’s most stunning beach, Scorching Bay has golden sand and impossibly clear blue water. It’s a favourite spot for a picnic, a game of beach cricket and a swim.

It's even got a café: popular beachside café Scorch-O-Rama serves great coffee, milkshakes and ice creams which you can have ‘to go’ or opt to be seated across the road from the café at special seaside tables.
