Wine tasting on two wheels in Martinborough

Just over an hour away from Wellington is the charming Martinborough wine village, home to more than 20 boutique vineyards that are so close together you can easily and safely bike or stroll the flat and quiet country roads between them

Daytripping from Wellington

Getting to Martinborough from Wellington is as easy as catching the train to Featherston, and hopping onto a connecting shuttle to Martinborough. Otherwise, you can self-drive or join a guided tour, such as the Tranzit Gourmet Wine Tour from Wellington.

Hire a bike

The best way to experience Martinborough's boutique cellar doors is on two wheels. Bikes are available for hire from Green Jersey located on Martinborough's main street, where the friendly team will set you up with a vintage-style bike, or you can opt for a tandem cruiser. Green Jersey will gladly collect any wine purchases you make directly from the vineyard, to save you carrying them on your bike.

Start with a coffee

Before you set off to explore Martinborough, you'll want to fuel up with a caffeine fix. Luckily this village has plenty of excellent cafes to choose from, with local produce and top-notch coffee on offer. Stop at the likes of the Neighbourhood Coffee House & Roastery and fuel up on their famous cheese scones and house-roasted espresso.

Visit boutique wineries

With more than 20 winery cellar doors around Martinborough, there are so many to choose from. Here are a few local favourites to get you started...

  • Luna Estate is an idyllic winery to kick off your day of wine tastings or a stop for lunch. Match a glass of wine with a menu inspired by Asian cuisine, or head straight for the tasting room for Luna's Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Meunier Rose.
  • Margrain Vineyard is a great place to sample more unusual varieties such as Gruner Veltliner and Chenin Blanc. The Vineyard Café at Margrain is an ideal spot to gaze over the vines - with a Gewurztraminer in hand, naturally
  • Poppies Martinborough is best known for three things: its knockout rosé, its delightful winemaker Poppy, and its incredibly delicious (and seriously Instagrammable) platters.

Quite Cool gelato in village square

Gelato on the green

On sunny days, one of the best ways to cool down after a day of tasting wines is with a scoop of gelato from It's Quite Cool - a charming little caravan in the picturesque green village square.

Grab a pint

The other great way to cool off is with a pint from Martinborough Brewery. If you're not sure whether you fancy an IPA or a pilsner, try the tasting tray and you might just find your new favourite beer.
