The Reeve's guide on what to do in Wellington
Jay and Anna Reeve boosted to Wellington for a wild weekend of adventure, craft beer and good food
Seal Coast Safari
Rated as one of Wellington's best tours, Seal Coast Safari takes you to meet some of Wellington's most wild residents. The three-hour 4WD safari tours begin by travelling up to the Wellington Wind Turbine to take in the panoramic views across the city, before adventuring across private farmland towards the rugged South Coast.
Once on the coast, the safari continues along the beaches with a stop to view (from a distance) the famous Leaning Lighthouse and what you've all come for - a chance to see some New Zealand fur seals. Soak up the wild beauty of the South Coast as you enjoy a hot drink and a snack and learn more about the local flora and fauna from your driver and tour guide.
Parrotdog Brewery Tour
There’s a lot you can do at Parrotdog's relaxed brewery bar a street back from Lyall Bay beach: surfers can turn up in jandals with a board under one arm, and dog walkers can take their pooches inside and cool off with a local beer.
Join a recently launched weekend brewery tour to go behind-the-beers and learn one of Wellington’s craft beer success stories, along with tasters of Parrotdog's core-range, monthly limited release ReinCanation series and their small batch, L.B. (Lyall Bay) Beer series, which is exclusively available at Parrotdog Bar and their cellar door, Nice Takeaway.
I love this city, the people, the landscape and the epic food and bev options
Switched on Bikes
Scenic views and must-visit hotspots are only an e-bike away with Switched on Bikes. You don’t need to be an experienced rider to get on an e-bike as it basically does all the work for you, making for a relaxed ride. The bike has an attached gadget that allows you to change speed and gears – two handy additions that will help you spend less time on the pedals and more time enjoying the view.
Late night bites and bottomless brunch
For guaranteed good food and good times, Dragonfly is a contemporary Asian restaurant, bar and courtyard with rustic Asian influences in the heart of Courtenay Place. The red duck curry is a must-try, and definitely order some dumplings.
Visit local favourite, Rock Yard for the intense flavours that Vietnamese cuisine is famous for. The legendary rice paper rolls are made fresh and served with house-made peanut sauce and the pork comes three ways with grilled pork slices, pork patties and fried pork spring rolls.
For brunch with a twist, Master Kong serves bottomless yum cha every Saturday and Sunday. Located on the harbour's edge, watch the world go by as you fill up on unlimited food and drinks.
Sofitel Wellington is the ultimate romantic weekend stay. Taking its cue from the nearby Wellington Botanic Garden, Sofitel Wellington has an elegant botanical theme that mixes with the hotel’s signature French influences to create a one-of-a-kind luxurious experience. The garden fit-out continues upstairs in your beautifully appointed room with garden or city views.
Start your stay with a well-made gin and tonic at The Green Room made with your choice of 18 different gins, including that of local Martinborough distillery Lighthouse. Settle into a sumptuous velvet armchair by the cosy fireplace and soak up the chic surrounds and the stunning Renaissance still life-style photographs of cut flowers that adorn the walls.
