A wild weekend outside the city - Explore State Highway 2
Get out and explore Hutt Valley's delightful food and drink offerings and Wairarapa's boutique vineyards and stores
Treat yourself to a night of luxury in one of Wellington's inner city hotels and head out on SH2 to explore the beautiful Hutt Valley and Wairarapa regions.
Immerse yourself in the Martinborough vineyards and visit Greytown, a picturesque village filled with unique boutique stores. Eat the best sandwich of your life and battle it out with ten-pin bowling or go-kart racing, followed by craft beer and barbecued meats.
Start your weekend off by heading for the hills – the Remutaka Hill to be exact – in search of our neighbouring wine region, Martinborough. It’s just under an hour’s drive from Wellington city, and the perfect place to spend your first night in the Wellington region.
How do a glass of wine and a freshly-made pizza sound? Colombo Martinborough is a vineyard and cellar door set amongst 20-year old pinot noir vines. Go for a wine tasting and stay to share a bottle of wine, an antipasto platter, and a wood-fired pizza beside the cosy fire.
Martinborough's wineries are all located close together, making it a delightful place to explore on foot or by hiring a bike. Make an afternoon of it and visit a couple of wineries, stopping off for lunch on the way.
Gear up in Greytown
From Martinborough, it's a 20-minute drive to Greytown, where you'll find great cafes for breakfast and excellent shopping.
It's no surprise that Greytown has previously been awarded as New Zealand's most beautiful town. The picturesque main street is lined by historical buildings established trees, cafes, and boutique and vintage stores. The perfect place to while away a Saturday morning.
A visit to Blackwell & Sons to see the many beautiful bicycles is a must. The store is an authorised dealer of Pashley Cycles, a UK-based bicycle manufacturer known for their hand-built, high-grade craftsmanship.
Battle it out at Brewtown
Head back over the Remutaka Hill towards Upper Hutt to find your next stop. Bringing together some of the region's top breweries and delicious food on one site, Brewtown is a one-stop shop and a must-visit for craft beer lovers.
As if that wasn't exciting enough, Brewtown has added an entertainment complex complete with mini-golf, ice skating, paintball, ten pin bowling, cart racing and a trampoline park.
Take on some activities before sampling craft beers and ordering up some delicious food to share (whoever comes last shouts the first round!)
Taste the best Reuben in town
Hidden away in Petone, you’ll find Scheckter's Deli who are famous for their sandwiches – filled with deli meats, cheeses and pickled vegetables. The Reuben is a must-try!
Run by the friendly husband-and-wife duo Steven and Valda Scheckter, the deli is full of interesting finds from around the world. Pomegranate molasses to boerewors and biltong, olives and olive oil, pasta, rice and corn masa. If you're looking for a hard-to-find ingredient, we bet you'll find it here. Why not stock up on some supplies before heading back to the city?
