If you're short on time these options will give you a taste of what the Remutaka Cycle Trail has to offer.
Approx cycling time: 3 - 5 hours
Grade: 2 (Easy)
Suitable for: Beginners, casual cyclists and families. For more experienced riders it's an easy warm up before the more technical forested section.
Transport options: Petone is easily accessible so there are many options. You can leave your car parked at Petone, or if you're staying in Wellington you can catch the train to Petone Station. Once you reach Maymorn you can catch the train back to Wellington, getting off in Petone if you need to.
The first section of the trail runs mostly along the banks of the Hutt River, through parkland on the fairly easy grade sealed and gravel paths of the popular Hutt River Trail. With the population centres of Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt nearby, it's an ideal casual ride, either partially or in its entirety. You eventually leave the riverbank at Te Marua and follow a short road section to Maymorn Station.
Approx cycling time: 2-hour return cycling
Grade: 2 - 3 (Easy to intermediate)
Suitable for: Regular cyclists with a good level of fitness. It's recommended that children should be over 12 years of age.
Transport options: You can drive to Kaitoke (north of Wellington) and use the car park provided or you have the option of catching the train from Wellington to Maymorn Station and start the trail from there, it will just take a little longer.
You'll follow the old railway route, featuring restored railway bridges and historic tunnels, through plantation forestry to the Summit. Spend a little time looking around the Summit Yards and cycle through the Summit Tunnel (remember to take a strong torch!), which dates back to 1877, before returning back the way you came.
Our Official Partners are available to help with bike hire, pick ups, drop offs and accommodation, but they will need to be booked in advance.
