Spend a day experiencing the Rimutaka Cycle Trail.

Maymorn / Kaitoke - Featherston

Approx cycling time:  4 - 5 hours

Grade:  2 - 3 (Easy to intermediate)

Suitable for:  Regular cyclists with a good level of fitness. It's recommended that children should be over 12 years of age.

Transport options:  Catch the train from Wellington to Maymorn station or drive to Kaitoke (north of Wellington) and use the car park provided. Once you reach Featherston you'll be able to get the train all the way back to Wellington, or stop at Maymorn, if your car is parked at Kaitoke. 

If you've only got one day then the section to do is the Rimutaka Rail Trail. It's a moderate climb to the Summit, followed by a downhill section into the Wairarapa. You'll pass old railyards, cycle through restored rail tunnels and cross picturesque bridges. Once you reach Cross Creek turn north-east and cycle to the town of Featherston.

Featherston - Maymorn

Approx cycling time:  5 - 6 hours

Grade:  2 - 3 (Easy to intermediate)

Suitable for:  The westerly direction is more challenging so requires a moderate level of fitness.

Transport options:  Catch the train from Wellington to Featherston. When you arrive at Maymorn you'll be able to catch the train back to Wellington.

Once you reach Featherston cycle on the off-road limestone path, on Western Lake Road, for approx 12km. You will then need to follow the trail west to Cross Creek and continue on up to the Summit. Stop here for some lunch before heading down to Maymorn.

Featherston - Petone

Family Hutt River Trail

Approx cycling time:  6 - 8 hours

Grade:  2 - 3 (Easy to intermediate)

Suitable for:  The westerly direction is more challenging to requires a moderate level of fitness.

Transport options.  This is a better option for those staying in Featherston as its a full day of cycling. You could catch the train from Wellington to Featherston, or use one of the Official Partner shuttles, but would need to set out early. For your return to Featherston the train leaves from Petone Station, a short cycle from Petone Wharf.  You can also catch a train to Wellington from here.

Use the off-road limestone path, on Western Lake Road, to cycle from Featherston.  Take the trail west to Cross Creek, cycle up to the Summit and down to Maymorn. Head towards the riverbank at Te Marua and follow the Hutt River Trail. Stop for some lunch in Silverstream and continue south on the trail until you reach Hikoikoi Reserve. From here you cycle along Petone foreshore until you reach the Petone Wharf.

Featherston - Orongorongo

Approx cycling time:  6 - 8 hours

Grade:  3 - 4 (Intermediate to advanced)

Suitable for:  Regular cyclists with a good level of fitness.  

Transport options:  This is a better option for those staying in Featherston as its a full day of cycling. You could also catch the train from Wellington to Featherston, or use one of the Official Partner shuttles, but would need to set out early. Pre-book a shuttle (using our Official Partners) to pick you up from Orongorongo and return you to either Featherston or Wellington.

Use the off-road limestone path to cycle from Featherston, on Western Lake Road. Once you reach the trail you'll be cycling on a sealed public road, where you continue south alongside Lake Wairarapa and the Wairarapa Moana Wetlands Park, to the coast at Ocean Beach. Take in the views across Cook Strait, on a clear day you can see the South Island's Kaikoura Ranges. Continue on around the South Coast, possibly spotting some fur seals (if its the right time of year), until you reach Orongorongo.
