Three day option

The ultimate way to experience all that the Rimutaka Cycle Trail has to offer.

Petone - Orongorongo

Wild Coast Trail at Turakirae Scenic Reserve

Grade:  2 - 3 (Easy to intermediate / advanced)

Suitable for:  Regular cyclists with a good level of fitness.

Accommodation:  Silverstream, Featherston or Official Partners along Western Lake Road. You might like to arrange for your bags to be transferred by one of our Official Partners, so that you can travel light.

Transport options:  Petone is easily accessible so there are many options.  You can leave your car parked at Petone or if you're staying in Wellington you can catch the train to Petone to start your journey. Once you reach Orongorongo you can either use the Wainuiomata Coast Road to link you back to your start point, or arrange a pick up from one of our Official Partners (this will need to be done in advance).

Day one

Approx cycling time:  2 - 3 hours

Instead of heading out straight away allow yourself some time to look around the little seaside suburb of Petone. Look around the specialty shops and fashion boutiques or treat yourself to a coffee in one of the many cafes.

Be sure to pick up food and water supplies today as beyond the first section there aren't any shops along the trail.

The first section beings at Petone Wharf. Head along the Petone foreshore to the mouth of the Hutt River and follow the trail north-east beside the river.

Day two

Approx cycling time:  5 - 6 hours of cycling

Continue along the riverbank, until you reach Te Marua, then take a journey into New Zealand's past by following the old railway route through a mix of native bush and plantation forest.

Emerge from the ranges at Cross Creek, into the Wairarapa Valley. You can turn north-east on Western Lake Road and cycle 12km to Featherston or turn south-west to your pre-booked accommodation on Western Lake Road.

Day three

Approx cycling time:  6 - 8 hours

Ride south towards the coast and the big blue of Cook Strait. The last section of the trail shows off the rugged beauty of the South Coast.  Cycle around to Turakirae Head and then continue onto Orongorongo.

Our Official Partners are available to help with bike hire, pick ups, drop offs and accommodation, but they will need to be booked in advance.
