Made in Wellington

Making magic is easy in Wellington. From unique locations within easy reach and access to award winning crews, to street closures, permits and permissions, the production process flows smoothly in this town that lives and breathes screen.

Wellington's award-winning crews, facilities, talent and vanguard technology have enabled the creation of film and television projects such as The Hobbit, Emperor, Reservoir Hill, The Adventures of Tintin, Avatar, Man of Steel, The Tribe, William Shatner’s A Twist in the Tale, The Lovely Bones, Girl vs. Boy, Wolverine, District 9, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings trilogy among many, many others.

And with the screen sector proudly supported by the Screen Wellington one-stop shop office and our film-friendly councils and residents, filming is arguably easier here than almost anywhere else in the world.

Big things happen in this cool little capital and here's a few of the stories to show it.

Thunderbirds Are Go!

Mix-media television series Thunderbirds Are Go is a powerful example of how Wellington and international entertainment companies can build successful long-term franchises, together.

The Hobbit trilogy

Easy access to dramatic locations. Home to world-leading special effects and the acclaimed producer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson. Where else could The Hobbit trilogy have been made but Wellington?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Sir Peter Jackson and his team at Weta took up the near impossible task of taking J.R.R Tolkien's masterpiece, the Lord of the Rings, from the page to the screen and firmly placed Wellington on the map as a film making destination.

US Cellular

With an ambitious brief calling for helicopter shoots, monstrous creatures and a street party atmosphere, Screen Wellington pulled out all the stops, showing the director and location scout that Wellington was perfect for the job.

King Kong

From 1930s New York to Skull Island, Wellington stood in for virtually every location in King Kong. The range and versatility of the region’s locations, plus the world-class special effects facilities made Wellington an ideal base for the production.

Land Transport New Zealand

Thanks to Screen Wellington, closing a street in downtown Wellington for 48 hours to enable an agency to film an important road safety commercial was no trouble.
