The New Zealand film industry is vibrant and world-renowned. It is famous for its filmmakers, post production and digital effects, set, costume and prop design, locations and can-do attitude.
The New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG) came into effect on 1 April 2014 and applies to all productions that started principal photography (or key animation) after 1 April 2014.
The NZSPG offers a cash grant to productions that achieve a certain level of qualifying New Zealand production expenditure.
The NZSPG replaces the Screen Production Incentive Fund and Large Budget Screen Production Grant.
This grant encourages medium to large budget productions, both New Zealand and International, to film here.
International productions are eligible for a cash grant of 20% of Qualifying New Zealand Production Expenditure (QNZPE) with a 5% Uplift available for a smaller number of productions that can demonstrate significant economic benefits to New Zealand.
New Zealand Productions are eligible for a cash grant of 40% of QNZPE. New Zealand Productions must have significant New Zealand content or be official co-productions.
QNZPE is generally production expenditure spent by the applicant on:
QNZPE includes fees and expenses of non-New Zealanders who work on the production in New Zealand, provided (in the case of non-cast members) they work on the production for at least 14 days.
Further details on exclusions to QNZPE are set out in the NZSPG Criteria. There are slight differences between the definition of QNZPE for International Productions and New Zealand Productions.
