Get out of town

Experience a part of Wellington you’ve never been to before, or get out of town and see the wider region.

Wairarapa

Just an hour drive or train ride from central Wellington is the Wairarapa region, with a rugged coastline and quaint country towns. Wairarapa is one of New Zealand’s top food and wine destinations. Visit Martinborough, Featherston and Greytown and explore the boutique shops and cafés.

Kāpiti Coast

The Kāpiti Coast is located north of Wellington, and is easily accessible by train or short drive. Kāpiti boasts 40kms of unspoilt beaches, a warm climate and friendly people. Check out the coastal suburbs of Paraparaumu and Paekākāriki, and have a dip on the beach in Waikanae.

Hutt Valley

Only a 15 minute drive or train ride from Wellington, the Hutt Valley is home to adventurous activities, a rich culture and heritage, and beautiful scenery. Petone is a seaside suburb with a great selection of interesting shops and international food stores.

Matiu-Somes Island

Hop on the East by West Ferry from Queens Wharf and you’ll be at Matiu-Somes Island in no time. In the middle of Wellington harbour, this island was once a quarantine station and is now a nature reserve with plenty of native plant and bird life – and a great place for a picnic.

Piction and Marlborough

Hop on a ferry for the three-hour trip from Wellington to Picton, which is at the top of the South Island.

The Interislander and Bluebridge have student discounts, so take advantage of this and explore the beautiful Marlborough region, which is known for its hiking, mountain biking and wineries.

Suburban adventure

Explore some of Wellington’s most interesting suburbs or a part of the city you’ve never seen before. The historic cottages of Thorndon make for great Instagram opportunities, Miramar is home to the studios behind films like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and Newtown has great international restaurants and shops.
