Self-drive itinerary: two nights in Wellington

Don't underestimate how many activities and attractions there are to explore in Wellington

Most people arrive in the afternoon or early evening after travelling from Taupo, Hawke's Bay or the South Island, and need a full day set aside for activities in Wellington.

Your clients will ideally need a minimum of two nights in Wellington to have a full day to explore. With a wide range of accommodation options, you will be able to find the perfect spot to meet your client’s needs.

Day One

Morning: Allow half a day for your clients to drive to Wellington. Depending on whether they drive along State Highway 1 or 2, they could stop either in Kāpiti or Wairarapa for lunch.

Afternoon: Your clients can leave their car at the hotel and explore the city on foot. They could ride the historical Wellington Cable Car up to the Wellington Botanic Garden and then follow the walking trail back down to the city.

Evening: Explore the city by night and check out the amazing dining options and nightlife.

Day Two

Morning: Book your clients on a Switched on Bikes e-bike tour around the Wellington harbour. 

Lunch: They can explore Wellington's little food haven, Hannah’s Laneway and enjoy one of the many lunch spots along Cuba Street.

Afternoon: Book them on a Te Papa Highlights Tour followed by some free time to explore the famous museum.

Evening: After dinner, your clients could go looking for a little spotted kiwi in the wild on a Zealandia By Night Tour.

Day Three

Morning: If your clients want to see movie magic, they could drive out to Miramar to visit Wētā Cave. Book them on the Wētā Cave Combo Tour to experience Weta’s two most popular tours.

Lunch: They could enjoy lunch in Miramar and then check out the views at Mt Victoria Lookout before driving home.
