To mark the fifth anniversary of the Christchurch mosque attacks, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Te Tira Pūoro o Aotearoa presents a unique collaboration promoting unity and peace through music.

‘Beyond Words’ features powerful Moroccan vocalist Oum and oud virtuoso Kyriakos Tapakis. The programme includes works from Valerie Coleman, Reza Val, and Arvo Pärt. It includes the world premiere of a new work from acclaimed New Zealand composer John Psathas, ONZM. Psathas’ 'Ahlan wa Sahlan', composed in collaboration with Oum and Tapakis, uses the Arabic welcome greeting to let people know they are in a place where they belong.

This work has been created with guidance from The Central Iqra Trust and Muslim communities from across Aotearoa New Zealand.

‘Beyond Words’ is presented by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in association with the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts. Held every second year, the 2024 festival runs from 23 February to 17 March. The festival features free and ticketed events including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, literature and more.
