From the great works of the classical canon to contemporary New Zealand artists and everything in between, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra offers an outstanding programme for 2023.

Season events

One of the world’s oldest national symphony orchestras, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) has charmed audiences with memorable concerts and recordings since 1947. Today, it is recognised as an outstanding orchestra of international stature. The NZSO’s reputation for artistic excellence attracts many of the world’s leading musicians, conductors and soloists each year.

In 2023 the orchestra is proud to bring audiences more of the best international artists and an array of top Kiwi talent.

Become Ocean, Marsalis: Blues Symphony, and Beethoven 5

NZSO proudly welcomes conductor André de Ridder for three nights of ground-breaking music:

  • the Pulitzer-Prize-winning epic ‘Become Ocean’ by John Luther Adams
  • an extraordinary night of American sound that is Marsalis: Blues Symphony
  • the timeless ‘Fifth Symphony’ by Beethoven.

Bernstein & Copland

Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero leads the NZSO in Copland’s Third Symphony, and burgeoning piano superstar Joyce Yang performs Bernstein’s six-part virtuoso symphony ‘The Age of Anxiety’.

Poem of Ecstasy

Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Gemma New conducts a programme featuring titans of early twentieth-century romanticism.

Music of John Williams

The NZSO wraps up the 2023 season with bona fide superstar Anne-Sophie Mutter and the music of one of the most entertaining and influential composers of the 20th century: John Williams.
