About the performances

Colours

Mahler’s ‘Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth)’ takes centre stage in Colours. With solos shared by tenor Oliver Sewell and baritone Hadleigh Adams, these seven works for orchestra and voice are sure to thrill. You will also hear world-renowned pianist Jian Liu, who joins the orchestra to play Richard Strauss’ ‘Burleske’.

Prophecy

Orchestra Wellington showcases a second young composer this season with a new commission from Briar Prastiti. Prophecy also features the supremely talented Amalia Hall treating us to Britten’s ‘Violin Concerto’. And closing the show is ‘Belshazzar’s Feast’, performed by Orpheus Choir, Wellington Brass Band, and Hutt City Brass.

Pharaoh

Pharaoh invites Japanese timpanist Tomomi Nozaki to the stage, joining the orchestra for a timpani solo in the John Psathas piece ‘Planet Damnation’. The night also features Orpheus Choir Wellington bringing you Mozart’s ‘Thamos, King of Egypt’.

Red Moon

For the season’s grand finale Red Moon, the orchestra presents the New Zealand premiere of one of the most serious and significant operas of the 20th century — Alban Berg’s ‘Wozzeck’. Directed by music director Marc Taddei, this astonishing event promises to be one of New Zealand’s most significant classical performances in 2023.
