More than 500 of New Zealand’s finest barbershop singers are heading to the St James Theatre. They’re there to battle it out for the crown of the country’s best barbershop chorus or quartet. The SING Wellington Barbershop Harmony New Zealand National Convention is set to be a harmonious weekend. More than 500 singers will take part in the competition. Participants will be drawn from 12 choruses and 20 quartets throughout the country.

Special guests will headline the convention’s Saturday night public show. America’s Signature Quartet will perform. Joining them will be the top three winning choruses and top three quartets.

Harbour Capital Chorus musical director Antony Currington says Wellington is New Zealand’s home of barbershop. “The current gold medal chorus Vocal FX is just the latest in a line of choruses and quartets recognised among the world’s best.” Other successful Wellington barbershop groups include Pacific Connection and the Musical Island Boys. “It’s fitting that we give Wellingtonians the opportunity to see and experience for themselves the beauty, richness and power of barbershop from the best in the business.”
