Since 1961 the Golden Shears championships have captivated audiences and pushed competitors to their limits. In 2024, the championships will again be held in Masterton. The event tests the skill and physical prowess of highly trained shearers, wool handlers, and pressers. Events for all three skills are organised for the novice, junior, intermediate, senior, and open grades. Head down to the War Memorial Stadium in Masterton to smell the lanolin and see the muscles flex.

Shearing was once considered just an arduous farm task. Now it’s recognised as an elite sporting pursuit. At the Golden Shears expect nonstop action and entertainment culminating in the Open Final. It’s a heart-stopping test of speed and quality as six men shear 20 sheep each. The entire stadium is on the edge of their seats along with an audience of 70,000 people watching the live broadcast. The best in the world fight it out for the most coveted title — Golden Shears Open Champion.
