World of WearableArt Show

Wellington has so much to offer, says Katherine Bertram. The three-time World of WearableArt (WOW) Show finalist is one of Wellington’s biggest fans. In the lead-up to WOW, a spectacular fusion of design, art, music, and performance, the wearable artist and designer shares her favourite things about living in the capital.

“I draw a lot of inspiration from Te Papa. There’s such a range and you get to see things up close.” Katherine’s also a big fan of the annual Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition hosted by the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. “It’s really cutting edge. So many different forms are described as drawing — seaweed on the wall is a drawing, ceramics on the wall is a drawing. That freedom of expression is really inspirational.”
When it comes to fashion, Katherine’s style is reflective of the way she works — eclectic and without rules. “I love the sustainability of secondhand finds and Wellington has a fantastic range of preloved clothing. Wander down Cuba Mall and fan out into the side streets and you’ll find some fantastic places to pick up a bargain, something vintage and quirky.”
“What Coastal Fasteners doesn’t know about isn’t worth knowing. If you have an engineering problem that requires any nut, bolt, or screw, they will have the solution and the patience to tell you what to do.” Katherine also recommends The Fabric Store. “It’s like a creative Mecca where they know your name and have so much to tempt you.”
“The Larder in Miramar has some of the best food ever. QT Wellington has the best art feast to indulge in whilst you eat. Scorch-O-Rama has the best menu and sensational views. Pickle and Pie in the city will make you fall in love with pastry and condiments.”
Katherine’s favourite city circuit takes her up the Wellington Cable Car, down through the Wellington Botanic Garden and into the Begonia House and Café. “Often there is a great little exhibition on show in the Tree House or Greenhouse”. Then she’ll wander through the Lady Norwood Rose Garden and down into the city where she’ll pop over to the waterfront and enjoy the cafés. Finally, she takes the harbour walk around to Te Papa and onto Oriental Bay. “Don’t forget to look up at St Gerard’s Church and Monastery” she says.
