What were your first impressions of Wellington as a city/region?
It was so pleasing to my eyes. Also, it was so quiet that my ears rang for some form of sound as I hail from a busy Indian city!
What are the differences between your classes/tutors here in Wellington compared to back home?
My previous education was 14 years ago so my opinions may differ compared to others, but I felt the tutors in New Zealand are very clear, non-repetitive and specific in their teaching. If we pay enough attention, we get used to their teaching patterns and we can learn the subject in one attempt. I am living proof of it as I ensured I paid attention in class, I scored A or A+ in all subjects and got picked to be a part time Tutor.
Are you thinking of staying in Wellington after your studies to work? Why?
It has been over 18 months that I have been in Wellington already and I don’t feel like leaving any time soon. Even though I came here to study and to work, it feels like I am on a holiday as I enjoy the walks and the hills. Everything seems to have a structure and the environment is people friendly.
Have you participated in any Study in Wellington programmes? How did you find them?
Yes, Work Ready in Wellington and the Employer Connect Programme.
The Work Ready in Wellington sessions helped me understand the New Zealand work culture, what to expect in interviews and helped me learn about the Immigration and Residence visa policies.
During the Employer Connect Programme, it was helpful because I interacted with actual employers here in Wellington which helped me understand how and why they are different compared to my previous experiences overseas. The sessions also bridged some of the gaps in my understanding of work culture in New Zealand and the structure of cover letter and CV which improved the acceptance rate of my job applications eventually.
What about Wellington reminds you of home?
I was brought up in the foothills of Himalayas in a town called Shimla. Some of the steep roads and hills remind me of my childhood.
What is one of your best Wellington memories?
The first ever flight from Auckland to Wellington on a sunny day. Also, the long walk leading to Mount Kaukau.
