WhosOnLocation

WhosOnLocation might be a small independently-owned business employing just 21 staff, but its office space would suggest otherwise. Take a look inside.

Named in Deloitte’s Fast 500 for 2016, 2017 and 2018, this nimble little tech company is committed to creating experiences for both its customers and employees that are “so seamless and enjoyable that you’ll be blown away”.

While other local tech companies are busy pumping precious funds into their next big development, WhosOnLocation has taken a small step sideways to invest in an aspect of the business that's crucial to achieving long term success - its employees.

The company recently moved into a light and open new studio workspace on Victoria Street to house its rapidly growing number of employees - now 21 in total including two stationed at a remote office in San Francisco.

When you walk in the front door, you're greeted by a light and open studio befitting of an international tech giant: bright modern minimalist decor, staff-centric work spaces, and thoughtfully-designed features with employee wellbeing and productivity in mind.

There are bike stands for commuters, spacious open-plan working areas, colourful locker bays, and a pool table for staff to relax and unwind. There are private breakout areas, a sunny open balcony for BBQing in summer and plenty of greenery.

Established in 2017 by founder and CEO Darren Whitaker-Barnett and Chief Technology Officer Tom Peck, WhosOnLocation offers a full suite of software products designed to help organisations manage their people presence and evacuation processes.

The company has been named in Deloitte's Fast 500 in 2016, 2017 and 2018, the Fast 50 list in 2018, and the Asia Pacific Fast 500 in 2017.

Darren says the key to his company’s success is undoubtedly its employees.

We work as a team, collaborating to solve problems and deliver the best possible solution. Everyone is treated equally no matter their experience.

"We need everyone to be successful. We work as a team, collaborating to solve problems and deliver the best possible solution. Everyone is treated equally no matter their experience," he says.

It's obvious these values not only underpin the design of the office space, but everything WhosOnLocation does.

"Our mission is to be the top cloud-based people presence solution for enterprise-scale organisations."

"To achieve this, we live by our core values every day. We keep both our workplace and customer interactions authentic, breath innovation and tackle every project or challenge as a team. This makes us lean, agile and responsive - so we can deliver on what we say, when we say," Darren says.

To further support the company's values, Darren set out to create a flexible work environment where employees feel welcome and trusted, can have a bit of fun and are rewarded for their efforts.

To further support the company's values, Darren set out to create a flexible work environment where employees feel welcome and trusted, can have a bit of fun and are rewarded for their efforts.

"Being a small team brings about lots of opportunity. If one of our people is interested in doing something outside of their day-to-day role, we try to get them involved in other areas where we can.

"We work and play hard. We have quarterly kudos, free fruit, lots of social functions, Friday craft beers, a personal development budget, and a weekly pool tournament to get a bit of friendly competition going in the office," he says.
