Choosing a bank

When it comes time to open a bank account, there are five main banks in New Zealand, plus a range of smaller banks to choose from.

The main banks are ANZ, BNZ, ASB, Westpac and Kiwibank, as well as several other banks such as TSB Bank, Rabobank and The Cooperative Bank.

All of the main banks have several branches in Wellington and ATM's located all around the city.

Opening an account

Many of the banks in New Zealand will help you open an account, get a credit card and apply for a home loan before you even get here.

They often provide migrant support and may even have language help if English is not your first language.

You could also be eligible for special migrant banking packages. Once you find a bank you like, give them a call to see if they can set up a package for you.
