A huge exhibition of national artists will be on display at Tākina in August. The Academy Prize for Visual Art exhibition is highly anticipated for art lovers. Artists from every corner of New Zealand will be vying for a $25,000 grand prize. Visitors can expect 350 contemporary artworks by 260 artists on display.
This landmark event, organised by the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (NZAFA), forms the centerpiece of a wider art event. Also present will be a collection of art champions who add to the broader narrative of local and national art development. The Wellington Sculpture Trust will mount a display celebrating 42 years creating and promoting public art in the city. Vincents Art Workshop will honour 40 years providing creative and social sanctuary in Wellington. Finally, nine South Island artists sharing Netherlands heritage exhibit an irreverent show through a multicultural creative lens.
NZAFA President Wayne Newman says “Tākina is Wellington’s new heart of creativity, and we’re delighted to fill it with the vision, energy, and diversity of New Zealand art. For the first time, our nation’s creative spirit takes centre stage at this world-class venue.” This inaugural art gathering offers an opportunity to experience the interconnectedness and talent spanning Aotearoa’s contemporary scene.
