Curtains Up on Wellington’s Theatre Lineup for 2026

The Rocky Horror Show.

The Rocky Horror Show is one of the announced shows for the 2026 Wellington theatre season.

“A heartwarming blast from start to finish” – are just some of the words used by impressed theatregoers following the completed run of Mamma Mia! at St. James Theatre, Wellington.

The show featured a local cast which performed to 24,000 people across 20 shows over three weeks. The theatre sold around 4500 ice creams, 5000 glasses of wine, and 450 cocktails during the run.

The talented ensemble of 55 had an absolute blast performing for their home city. Jody McCartney (who played Rosie in the show), says: “It has been the most beautiful and exciting ride to be part of this joyful show and watch thousands of audience members get up on their feet and sing along and share the party with us. We have all enjoyed every single second at the majestic St. James Theatre and it’s an experience that we will all cherish forever!”

Reviews for the show were overwhelmingly positive, with a 4.9 out of 5 rating on Ticketmaster, plus plenty of smiling faces exiting the theatre.

Hamish Mouat, executive producer at G&T Productions which, together with Capital Theatre Trust, brought Mamma Mia! to the stage, and who will also be directing the upcoming seasons of & Juliet and Matilda for the company, says: “We are so thrilled that Wellington has embraced Mamma Mia! this year. We knew that this was the party musical that the capital needed, and it is a joy to have witnessed how many people have experienced this production. Our cast, crew and band have created magic at the St. James Theatre, and we are so proud to be part of ensuring these musicals continue to play here in Wellington.”

Luckily for Wellington theatre fans, there’s plenty more theatre where that came from. The 2026 schedule is shaping into a stellar performance season, says Heidi Morton, general manager Events & Experiences at WellingtonNZ: “Wellington is the nation’s creative and cultural capital, and we are known for growing and fostering exceptional talent to bring world-class theatre performances to our city’s stages. Our upcoming season features comedy, romance, horror, drama, family and plenty of great music. Combined with sensational global talent alongside our city’s very own local talent, there are plenty of reasons to visit the theatre in 2026.”

The announced 2026 Wellington theatre season includes:

& Juliet

Currently playing to sell out success on Broadway, this is a fusion of classic and contemporary perfect for all ages. With a glittery aesthetic and heartwarming story, it’s ideal for lovers of pop culture, teen rom-coms, and empowering, feel-good fun. Tickets from $79.

Heathers The Musical

Venue TBA | May 2026

A high-octane rock musical, Heathers the Musical is a dark comedy and cult classic based on the 1989 film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. It blends sharp wit, teen drama, and catchy, edgy songs to explore high school cliques, bullying, and social pressure. Audiences can expect a mix of humour, satire, and emotional moments, with bold characters and a rebellious energy throughout.

Matilda The Musical

St. James Theatre | September 2026

A darkly whimsical, high-energy musical based on Roald Dahl’s tale of a brilliant girl defying cruel adults. Packed with witty lyrics, bold choreography, and heart, it’s clever and subversive, appealing to kids and adults alike. Fans of sharp storytelling, underdog heroes, and magical rebellion will be enchanted. This show is exclusive to Wellington and show dates will be announced later this month.

Theatre district hospitality businesses are also eager for the shows to come to the capital. Jose Ubiaga, owner operator at The Residence Bar & Dakota, says: “A busy St. James Theatre means a busy Courtenay Place – which creates vibrancy, a great atmosphere, and more people in bars and restaurants. Theatre also brings a variety of demographics into Courtenay Place – we see groups of friends and couples making the most of the evening, heading out for a pre-show dinner or visiting us for drinks. We will always welcome shows to this part of the city.”
