As a Māori artist, Josie’s work intentionally weaves Māori elements throughout. “I use Māori elements to weave stories and meaning into my work. They often explore ideas around , , , and self-identity. The patterns hold deeper and metaphorical meaning. Something more symbolic than literal, giving each piece a story that unfolds the longer you look at it.”
Josie’s approach to this year’s Advent calendar was deeply personal. “I started by jotting down all the things I love about Wellington. My process began with personal memories, then I researched what others love about the city, revisited some of my favourite spots, picked up new inspiration along the way, started sketching, and then brought everything to life digitally.”
The result? A contemporary, edgy interpretation of Advent that celebrates Wellington. Josie’s unique lens has given us a beautiful calendar for 2025. It's playful, inclusive, and deeply rooted in culture.
For Josie, Wellington’s unique mix of nature and city is a constant source of inspiration. “I absolutely love the birdlife and sanctuaries here. Kākā aren’t common up north, so hearing their screeches outside my window every day feels really special. Being so close to the ocean, the bush, and the city all at once feels lush and very spoilt.”
Her favourite spots include Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush, and the Botanic Gardens. She also enjoys exploring rock pools at Princess Bay and Island Bay. “Lately, I’ve been loving The Sauna Project out in Lyall Bay. With the days getting longer and the weather warming up, it’s the perfect way to end the week for me. A hot sauna with friends, a cold plunge, and a great community of people. The team there is so welcoming, and the essential oils and heat make it such a wholesome reset after a big week.”
When it comes to food, she’s a regular at Scopa, Mr Go’s, Loretta, and Puku Pies & Kai at Lyall Bay. She adds, “Another favourite is Aunty Mena’s, a vegan and vegetarian restaurant I fell in love with back in 2019. Now that I’m back in Wellington, I’m there nearly every week! They’re so kind, and their Roti Chanai and Laksa are the best I’ve ever had.”
