Hannahs Laneway: Wellington's hidden foodie gem
Could this former shoe factory be the world's tastiest little laneway? There's only one way to find out...
Pizza Pomodoro
13 Leeds Street, Te Aro, Wellington
One of the originals in Hannahs laneway, family-run Pizza Pomodoro has been producing authentic Italian pizzas since 2000. Owner and pizza chef Massimo Tolve is originally from Naples and is maestro in the art of pizza-making.
The pizza dough is hand-rolled, topped with fresh and high-quality ingredients then cooked in a wood-fired oven for the perfect pie. So perfect in fact that Pizza Pomodoro has been certified by Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana – the Michelin star of the pizza world. Pizza Pomodoro make all of the classic Italian pizzas plus some original creations and a savvy collaboration with neighbouring Golding's means you can order and eat their pizzas from the comfort of your bar stool.
Fortune Favours
7 Leeds Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Set in an old industrial building that was once used for restoring furniture, Fortune Favours is one of the growing number of brewbars in the central city.
Some of the building’s original features have been retained and new steampunk features added, along with a sunny outdoor deck with great views of some of Wellington’s famous street art.
Fortune Favours specialises in charcuterie and cheese platters to partner with their large line-up of beers on tap. If you do develop a taste for Fortune Favours flavours while you’re here, you can get in one last beer at their Wellington Airport bar.
A taste of Mexico in Hannahs Laneway
Leeds Street, Te Aro, Wellington
An electric green truck has taken over and is adding a Mexican flavour to Wellington's tastiest little laneway.
Donnie Taco brings together a refined menu that can be enjoyed at Golding's Free Dive Bar. With three taco options ("mushie", "chooky" and "porky"), burritos, guacamole and tasty "filthy quesadilla" on offer, this little laneway is the perfect spot for a spicy treat.
While the food truck is only open Wednesday through Sunday, don't worry, you can still get your taco fix the rest of the week inside the bar through the Leeds Street Bakery window.
Hanging Ditch
14 Leeds Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Tucked away in a cosy corner of Hannahs Laneway, Hanging Ditch is a cocktail bar where the range of liquor is, quite literally, off the hook.
Their bottles of booze are suspended from the ceiling, dangling overhead on bungee cords which the bartenders pull down on to pour your bevvy – to dazzling effect.
Spectacle aside, Hanging Ditch are serious about creating delicious cocktails and use custom flavour atomisers to flavour your drink, to cut down on wasting herbs and garnishes and to add real oomph to their drinks. As well as cocktails, there’s a great selection of local beer and wine. Hanging Ditch is the ideal cosy spot for starting or ending your night out.
